A Feeling Before a Design

Every piece I create begins the same way—not with a pattern, a sewing machine, or a roll of fabric, but with a feeling.

I'm Kerry Munns, a Western Australian artist and designer, and for me, wearable art is one of the most personal forms of expression. When someone slips into one of my garments, they're not simply putting on clothing—they're wrapping themselves in a story, a memory, a moment of colour that first came to life on a canvas.

The Colours of Home

My inspiration is deeply rooted in the landscape I call home. Western Australia is a place of extraordinary beauty—vast, ancient, and endlessly inspiring.

From the rich ochre earth of the Wheatbelt where I grew up, to the silver-green shimmer of eucalyptus leaves in the morning sun, the violet skies before a summer storm, and the sandy coastal plains where I live today, colour surrounds me everywhere I look.

These landscapes aren't simply the backdrop to my life; they are woven into the very fabric of my art.

As an intuitive abstract expressionist, I'm not interested in painting exact replicas of what I see. Instead, I paint what I feel. The joy of discovering a hidden wildflower, the energy of a summer breeze, the wonder of standing amongst nature's gardens in full bloom. My paintings capture emotions rather than landscapes, and those emotions become the foundation of every wearable art piece I create.

Where Art Meets Fabric

The creative journey begins with an original artwork—whether acrylic on canvas, watercolour, mixed media, or digital art. Layer by layer, colour and movement evolve until the piece feels complete.

Then comes my favourite challenge: transforming that artwork into something you can wear.

How does a brushstroke become a flowing dress? How does the movement in a painting translate into the drape of linen? How can a piece of art become part of someone's everyday life?

This is where art and fashion truly meet.

Fashion with a Conscience

I work primarily with natural, sustainable fabrics, choosing materials that not only feel beautiful but honour the environment. Linen remains one of my greatest loves. It breathes, moves effortlessly, softens with time, and carries colour in a way that feels vibrant and authentic.

Much like art itself, it becomes even more beautiful with age.

In a world increasingly dominated by fast fashion and fleeting trends, I believe in creating pieces that last—not only in quality, but in meaning. Sustainable fashion isn't simply about choosing better fabrics, although that matters deeply to me. It's about buying fewer pieces, loving them more, and surrounding ourselves with things that bring genuine joy.

As women, our bodies carry us through many seasons of life—careers, motherhood, menopause, change, growth, and everything in between. I believe our clothing should offer comfort, confidence, freedom, and joy.
